About Our Group

Oxford Drum Troupe plays and teaches the rich, rolling rhythms that are traditionally heard at ceremonies and celebrations in West Africa, with occasional flavours from other parts of Africa. We play djembes, dun-duns, hand percussion and balafon.

On Monday evenings at Lake Street, we run an informal workshop for beginners and more experienced alike, teaching the basics of the djembe and creating exciting rhythms that fly. There are plenty of spare drums, or bring your own - do come and join us and experience the fun of making music together.

ODT perform regularly at local events such as the Cowley Carnival, Wittfest, Balliol College and the Zodiac. On Thursdays, we often invite master drummers to come and teach us new rhythms and songs and in December 2004 most of the group travelled to Abene in the Casamance region of Senegal to study with Malo Sonko and attend the local arts festival.

We are always looking for the chance to share our music with others, so if you're looking for something a bit different for a local event, that's guaranteed to get the party going, please give us a call.
